The winner of the The Grilled Cheese Grant is announced at the event after all the votes are tallied and all the funds totaled. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, March 21st, 2020, 3-7pm at Walker’s Point Center for the Arts (WPCA). ALL Grilled Cheese Grant finalists will receive a portion of the award winnings, however, the first place winner will receive the largest portion. The goal of The Grilled Cheese Grant is to FULLY FUND the first place awardee’s thesis project and PARTIALLY FUND the projects proposed by the other finalists (amounts are based on the total funds raised). The first place winner along with the first and second runner-ups will receive solo exhibitions at local, Milwaukee gallery spaces in the Fall of 2020 in addition to the monetary awards.


Any current MIAD or UWM undergraduate senior working to produce a thesis project is eligible to apply. Artists working in any media are encouraged to apply. Designers are encouraged to apply as long as their work fits within a fine art context. Applications to the The Grilled Cheese Grant should be treated as an artist/project grant. If accepted as a finalist, you MUST be present at the Grilled Cheese Grant event. The Fifth Annual Grilled Cheese Grant will be held on Saturday, March 21st, 2020, 3-7pm at Walker’s Point Center for the Arts (WPCA). Please consider this when applying. If chosen as a finalist and circumstances prevent you from attending, please notify the Grilled Cheese Grant organizers as soon as possible.MIAD offers a Thesis Scholarship opportunity for seniors each year. Finalists for The Grilled Cheese Grant will be announced AFTER MIAD’s scholarship awardees are announced. The Grilled Cheese Grant aims to provide more students with financial support for their projects, so any Grilled Cheese Grant applicant that is awarded a MIAD Thesis Scholarship will become ineligible to receive the Grilled Cheese Grant.

Selected Finalists:
All applications are reviewed by a panel of jurors through a semi-blind jurying process. Jurying will take place in early March and accepted finalists will be notified no later than March 11th, 2020. All notifications will be sent via email. Finalists will be invited to exhibit artwork(s) at WPCA for the event. Installation dates and specific installation details will be sent to the selected finalists via email. Portions of the finalists’ applications/proposals will be on view during The Grilled Cheese Grant to act as supplemental information for voters.

Application Guidelines/How to Apply:
The application has two components, a written portion (.pdf) and images (.jpegs/.pngs). Your images and .pdf will be combined into one .zip file.

Written Portion:
Contact information: 
– Name, institution, major or focus, website and/or Instagram (if applicable), email address, school email and/or personal email (Note: please consider providing an email address you are able to access after graduation, as email will be the main source of communication for organizing.

– Include an artist statement and/or a project statement about your proposed thesis work (500 word maximum)

Materials & Budget: – List of materials needed to complete thesis project – Budget that includes estimated costs for production of thesis work

Image List: – List of file names submitted, each accompanied with the following: title, materials, year completed, and dimensions or duration for each piece (i.e. firstname_lastname_01.jpg: Blue Sunrise, pastel and colored pencil on paper, 2019, 22 x 30”) – Please include any links to video or time-based media works in the image list

Combine all WRITTEN PORTION materials into one .PDF document saved as firstname_lastname.pdf You will save this .PDF along with your images into one .zip file.

Work Samples:
– 3-5 images/videos/samples of past completed work. Please do not exceed 5 samples total. Time-based media samples may not exceed 5 total minutes of viewing time. All images should be submitted in JPEG or PNG format. Each file should be saved at 72 ppi and should not exceed 2MB. All images should be saved in this format: firstname_lastname_01.jpg, firstname_lastname_02.jpg, etc. Images and time based media files should have accompanying information in the corresponding image list (see written portion). An applicant may submit both still images and time-based samples (i.e 2 videos + 3 images, 3 videos + 2 images, 5 images, 4 videos + 1 image etc.) One image is worth one minute of video time. (i.e. applicant submitting 2 images and 3 videos can submit up to 3:00 of video. Video work/time-based media samples can be submitted as .mov or .mp4 files or included as Vimeo/Youtube links in the image list. If you are submitting work through Vimeo/Youtube links, ensure that links are active and accessible without passwords.
– Renderings of your thesis project. (this can include but is not limited to: sketches of your proposed project, layout of theorized space/proposed installation of your work, digital mock-ups, Google Sketch-up renderings, etc.) Renderings should be submitted as JPEG or PNG files and should have accompanying information in corresponding image list (see written portion).
