The first year was held at After School Special (ASS), an artist collective made up of MIAD graduates who shared a studio space above a brewery in Riverwest. There were only a handful of applicants and the finalists were selected by members of the collective. The grilled cheese station was set up in a gallery space within ASS’s studio. We asked local businesses for in-kind cheese and bread donations so we could run the event for nearly no costs. The finalists were asked to present their work for consideration, like an elevator pitch. Their proposals were printed out but no artwork was displayed.
We raised enough money to partially fund one senior exhibition project.
Event attendees submitted votes by writing their favorite artist’s name on a piece of paper. GCG team members all wore denim shirts in an attempt to create a DIY uniform. We all decided it would be on-brand if the winner received a big novelty-sized check, so we made one out of stuff laying around in the studio. The event, which welcomed around 50 people, concluded by literally handing Audrey all of the cash we raised that very night! We also made a small donation with a portion of the proceeds to Diverse and Resilient, a local sexual advocacy organization that supports the LGBTQ+ community.
